How to calculate the average of an Excel column

Find the arithmetic mean of a numeric column without editing the file.

You can check an average price or stock level without creating a formula. SheetCommand calculates the arithmetic mean of the numeric column you name and displays the result in its summary. This is a read-only calculation: it does not change the spreadsheet cells.

Which values are included?

An arithmetic mean is the sum of valid numbers divided by their count. For 10, 20, and 30, the result is 20. Blank cells and values that cannot be read as numbers are ignored in this calculation.

The command does not calculate a weighted average, separate averages by category, or create a formula column. It returns one summary value for the named column while leaving all rows and columns as they were.

Calculate it with a command

Upload your file and name the numeric column you want to summarize. For example, Average of 'Price' column returns a figure with two decimal places in the result panel.

Make sure the source column contains numbers. Prices stored as text with currency symbols may not work. If you previously changed values in the current session, the average uses the currently processed version of the file.

How to do it

  1. Upload the file and identify a numeric column.
  2. Run Average of 'Price' column.
  3. Compare the displayed result with the range of your data.

Interpret the result

An extreme value can pull the mean upward or downward. For 10, 20, and 100, the mean is 43.33, which is not close to two of the three observations. For more context, ask for the minimum and maximum in separate commands.

The tool shows the answer in the summary instead of writing it into a new cell. If you need the number in another report, record the displayed value separately.

Frequently asked questions

Do blank cells count as zero?

No. Blank and nonnumeric values are excluded from the arithmetic mean.

Is the average written into my Excel file?

No. The result appears in the summary; the spreadsheet is unchanged by this calculation.
