How to edit Shopify product and inventory CSV files in Excel

Keep product and inventory exports distinct while preserving variant and location rows.

A Shopify CSV is useful for bulk review, but product and inventory exports are different files. Deleting a column or a variant row can damage a later import. This guide describes a controlled spreadsheet workflow, not a live Shopify integration.

Choose the right export

Export products to review titles, descriptions, and variants; use the inventory CSV for quantities by location. Download the appropriate file from the Shopify admin and retain a dated, untouched copy.

The same SKU can appear in more than one variant or location row. Never deduplicate on SKU alone. Check what the handle, SKU, variant, and location combination represents before editing.

How to do it

  1. Export the relevant Shopify CSV type.
  2. Save an untouched original.
  3. Check headings, SKUs, variants, and locations in Excel.

A safe sample worksheet

In a review sheet use A=SKU, B=Variant, C=Location, D=Current quantity, E=New quantity. Treat each SKU+variant+location combination as a separate record; change only the intended E cells.

When saving CSV, check headers, encoding, and delimiters. Excel may turn SKUs with leading zeros into numbers, so import those as text. Preserve the columns Shopify expects and test a small import first.

Checks before re-importing

Current and new inventory quantities serve different purposes. Follow Shopify's current inventory CSV validation rules and confirm a small sample before a bulk update.

SheetCommand does not connect to Shopify or guarantee a Shopify-ready import file. It can preview or sort supported files; verify the final CSV and actual stock in Shopify admin.

Frequently asked questions
